Genetics: Original California x Skunk

This feminised version of the California Special variety comes from crossing an Original California of American origin with a Skunk. The breeder describes it as a mostly indica hybrid, though they don't publish an exact indica to sativa percentage. The idea behind the cross was to bring together the ease of cultivation and good production of the Californian line with the adaptability of Skunk, known for growing in practically any environment.

From the Californian side it inherits the characteristic touch of sweet orange and its generous harvest, whilst the Skunk contributes that classic hash and skunk background, as well as robustness and resilience. The feminised version maintains the qualities of the original regular variety and saves growers the work of identifying and removing males.

Regarding structure, it develops slightly bushy plants, with narrow light green leaves growing from a thin but firm stem. The leaf-to-flower ratio is balanced, so the buds have sufficient space and light to develop fully. The longer, more branched lateral branches tend to be the most productive, so it's worth encouraging good plant opening.

In cultivation: vigorous, hardy and productive outdoors

It's a variety considered easy to grow, versatile and disease-resistant, which makes it a stress-free choice for beginners. It adapts to almost any climate, with the exception of frost, and performs well in pots, in soil and also in hydroponic systems.

Indoors it reaches a height of 100 to 130 cm, a comfortable size for most grow tents and rooms. Flowering takes approximately 7 to 10 weeks, depending on the source, and production is around 130 g per plant, roughly 330 g/m². It's a moderate yield indoors, compensated by regularity and simplicity of management.

Where it really expresses itself is outdoors. In the open air it can grow up to 2.5–3 metres and offer yields of up to 700 g per plant, with some references mentioning 700 to 800 g in good conditions. Harvest arrives between late September and mid-October, so it's advisable to plant it with sufficient space and in areas where autumn doesn't arrive too cold.

With such vigour outdoors, it's worth providing good substrate and sufficient root volume so the plant can develop its full potential. Indoors, its branched structure allows good light distribution among the lateral tops.

Flavour and effect: sweet orange, hash and skunk

The aromatic profile of California Special is one of its most recognisable features. It combines notes of sweet orange and citrus with a background of classic hash and skunk. During the last weeks of flowering, the smell intensifies and takes on a citrus, sweet and somewhat funky character, so it's advisable to have good odour control indoors.

The buds are large, compact and resinous, with trichomes reaching almost to the tip of the largest leaves. The taste repeats the same blend as the aroma: an initial hit of sweet orange followed by a skunk hash finish, with full-bodied smoke.

The effect is typical of a pronounced indica: physical, heavy and relaxing, with a tendency towards sleepiness as it progresses. It's a variety designed for moments of rest and disconnection, more suitable for the end of the day than for activity. The breeder doesn't publish analysed percentages of THC or CBD, so its appeal lies more in flavour, ease of cultivation and physical sensation than in declared potency.
