Cannabis curing is a post-harvest process that is undertaken to improve the quality of the buds. It is a crucial procedure as it influences the flavour, aroma, effect and smoothness of the smoke or vapour when the cannabis is consumed.
Curing cannabis is important for several reasons. For instance, unwanted compounds such as chlorophyll are broken down during curing. Chlorophyll can impart a bitter or harsh taste to cannabis. This significantly improves cannabis flavour when consumed.
It also contributes to the conversion of THC-A to THC. Although most of this transformation occurs during drying, curing can also influence the potency of cannabis, as it is a slow and controlled conversion of THC-A into THC, the psychoactive compound that produces the desired effects.
Curing in a controlled environment allows for better preservation of terpenes, responsible for aroma, and cannabinoids. This results in a richer and more complex experience when consuming cannabis. By gradually removing the internal moisture from the buds in a slow and controlled way, the likelihood of the smoke being harsh or causing irritation when consumed is reduced.
Cannabis curing
After harvest, the buds are dried for approximately 7-14 days in a dark, cool, well-ventilated environment with a relative humidity of 45-55%.
Once dried, the buds are placed in airtight jars or special bags where the curing process begins. The jars are opened, ventilated, once a day for the first few weeks to allow residual moisture to escape. This process can take anywhere from 2 weeks to several months, depending on the desired level of perfection. It is stated that optimum curing can take as long as 6 months, resulting in a product of the highest quality.
It is certainly a process that requires patience and care, but it offers a cannabis with better organoleptic properties and a more pleasant effect.
In this section we bring together the products and equipment that will help in the process, specific products for store and cannabis curing.
