seeds by Batlle, a decorative climbing ivy variety with purple flowers. A plant that is adapted to both open ground and pot cultivation.

Batlle Cobea Scandens seeds, tropical climbing plant with purple flowers

It belongs to the climbing plant family Plemoniaceae, typical of South America and Mexico. It is named after the scientific and Jesuit chronicler Bernabé Cobo.

This ivy grows shrubby in the tropics, but also in colder climates. It can grow up to 5-6 metres in ideal conditions, with optimal temperature and cultivated in quality fertilised soil (1/2 garden soil, 1/4 peat, 1/4 sand).

The leaves are composed of 2-3 elliptical leaflets placed alternately and ending in a tendril the plant uses to climb up and down the walls at full speed.

Batlle Cobea Scandens seeds, perfect for covering fences and walls

It produces beautiful cup-shaped flowers with a calyx that looks like a 5cm diameter small saucer. The flowers appear green and pale and turn into purple when fully developed.

The flowers only last a few days, but the plant produces flowers continuously throughout the summer, autumn and early winter.

The germination period is at the end of winter and it is transplanted in mid-spring. It is advisable to use water low in lime, every 2 days in summer and less frequently in autumn. In case of too much heat it appreciates the leaves sprayed with water.

In areas with hot summers, its best place is in a sunny and shady area. It is also important in a cold autumn area, to place it in full sun. This plant does not withstand cold neither frosts because of its tropical heritage. In areas where the plant behaves like a perennial it is advisable to prune the branches to a third with scissors after the flowering phase.
