Alchimia is delighted to present Blue Dream, a historic US cannabis strain. This easy-to-grow, Sativa-dominant variety has long been a favourite among commercial growers in the US, known for its high yield and potent effect. It is now available in our feminised cannabis seeds catalogue.

Blue Dream is widely believed to have originated in California, possibly in Santa Cruz, where it gained popularity among enthusiasts. Initially, the sought-after cutting was only available in elite circles, but over time, it spread due to its highly prized characteristics.

One key figure in the evolution of Blue Dream was DJ Short, the creator of the renowned Blueberry, which won Best Indica at the High Times Cannabis Cup in 2000. His work was instrumental in developing Blue Dream and other strains that continue to thrive today.

Blue Dream, Blueberry x Super Silver Haze

The legendary Blue Dream resulted from crossing two iconic strains, Blueberry and Super Silver Haze.

Blueberry, an Indica, has a robust structure and broad leaves, with striking red and blue hues at the end of flowering. Its aroma features red fruit with earthy and sour notes. Easy to cultivate, it flowers in about 8 weeks, offering a deeply relaxing and enjoyable effect.

Super Silver Haze, on the other hand, is a Sativa strain. It takes about 10–11 weeks to flower, providing vigorous growth and a Haze-like aroma with incense and citrus. When hybridised with Blueberry, it resulted in Blue Dream’s most desirable traits: vigour, ease of cultivation, citrus Haze aromas, and the high yield of Super Silver Haze. The outcome is a Sativa-dominant hybrid with Indica-like growth characteristics, without the typical extended flowering period of a Sativa.

Blue Dream, high-yielding cannabis

Blue Dream thrives indoors, outdoors, and in greenhouses. It is highly resistant to growing mistakes and responds well to both organic and mineral nutrients. Its easy cultivation makes it an excellent choice for beginners, while experienced growers can achieve large harvests with minimal effort.

Once flowering begins, its Sativa influence (from SSH) causes it to double or even triple in size. Therefore, no extended vegetative period is needed for indoor cultivation. It adapts well to training techniques and responds positively to pruning.

Outdoors, given sufficient sunlight and root space, it can reach significant heights. When grown in open ground, plants can reach 3m, yielding over 1kg of dry buds, with the harvest ready in early October in the Northern Hemisphere. Indoors, in a 120cm x 120cm space, it can yield up to 600g per plant, with a flowering period of about 8–9 weeks.

Blue Dream, large, dense buds

Blue Dream produces large, dense, and visually striking buds that become even more appealing after curing. Its aroma combines incense and citrus notes reminiscent of Super Silver Haze, with a subtle sour and occasionally earthy undertone from Blueberry, blending two Old School strains.

Defoliating a few days before harvest simplifies the process, making trimming easy. It is best dried in an airy environment with controlled humidity, as the buds are notably large and compact.

Blue Dream, Sativa effect

While Blue Dream may not reach the THC levels of some modern US strains, it can still reach concentrations of 25%, delivering a potent experience. Its effects are unique, proving that THC content alone is not the only factor, cannabinoid and terpene synergy play a crucial role.

The effect sets in quickly, initially energising like Super Silver Haze, before transitioning into a balanced Sativa / Indica sensation that is calm and harmonious. In higher doses, it becomes profoundly relaxing or even narcotic, inducing mental blankness and a distorted sense of time.

Blue Dream offers the best of a high-flying Haze Sativa while maintaining the cultivation traits of an Indica. Productive and fast-growing, it remains one of California’s most celebrated strains.
