Rocalba Dandelion seeds, an extremely easy to cultivate plant

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) is a perennial, melliferous and herbaceous plant belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is native to Europe yet is present throughout the world as it has the ability to propagate very easily. It is considered an invasive species typical of meadows, lawns and roadsides.

It is germinated at the end of winter by placing a handful of seeds in a small pot with soil rich in worm humus or compost. The seeds should not be too much covered with soil (1mm maximum), and should be placed in a place with sunlight at a temperature of about 15ºC. The first shoots emerge after about 7-10 days.

When the plant is about 8-10cm high and the frost period is over, it is transplanted into the final pot or vegetable garden. A distance of about 10cm should be left between plants in all directions. In the case of direct sowing, the seeds are scattered on the ground and cleared when sprouting, leaving the strongest and fastest plants.

Ideally, it should be planted in a sunny area, although its sturdiness makes it viable in sun and shade as well. It also adapts to all substrates, whether they are loose or clayey, being ideal a good drainage and abundant nutrients.

It is not very demanding with water, moderate and relatively frequent watering is sufficient. However, for small plants they require regular irrigation to develop. The use of a drip or automatic irrigation system is interesting in order to facilitate the task.

The leaves and flowers are harvested in spring and summer. They can be eaten in salads, or dried to make infusions. It offers beneficial diuretic, depurative, antioxidant, anti-rheumatic, laxative and liver protection properties. And it also delivers high levels of calcium and iron (more than spinach) and vitamins A and C.
