Calendula officinalis
Pot Marigold is a flowering plant with an annual cycle, rustic and easy to care for. Planted in groups in the garden it provides a nice colourful effect, very suitable for composing flower borders. It can also be grown in pots or planters. It is popular as a bouquet flower.
The plant forms small shrubs about 40-50 cm high, full of double flowers in different shades of yellow-orange. It is sown in a seedbed in spring, and transplanted in full sun or semi-shade in autumn. Requires well-drained soils rich in organic matter. It requires regular watering but not waterlogging, as it is very sensitive to excess moisture.
Marigold petals has anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and antibiotic properties. They are also used in skin treatments and for conjunctivitis problems. In the kitchen, the petals are used to decorate dishes and to aromatise them.
In the vegetable patch, it is used as a repellent plant, with its characteristic aroma it keeps away harmful insects. Calendula is also used as a nematicide when cultivated among other plants. Thanks to the secretion of certain compounds through its roots, it keeps worms and other harmful menatodes away from the vegetables.
