Bhut Jolokia by Rocalba, until recently the hottest pepper in the world

Bhut Jolokia hot pepper originates from northwest India (Assam, Nagaland and Manipur) and is one of the hottest varieties on the market.

To get an idea of the potency of this hot chilli, until 2013 it held the Guinness World Record for the hottest chilli pepper in the world, currently surpassed by the Carolina Reaper Pepper. Based on the spiciness scale, the Scoville Heat Units, Bhut Jolokia reaches 1,001,304 SHU, about 125 times a Jalapeño's spiciness.

The plant is 45-120cm tall, and is noted for its high yield. It is advisable to pay attention to the flowers as they can easily fall off.

The best germination period is late February/early March, or one month after the last frost (about 2 weeks after the tomatoes). Peppers love heat and humidity, and germination indoors with a little light to stabilise the temperature between 28-30ºC is recommended.

To prevent Bhut Jolokia from resenting once planted outdoors, it is advisable to take it out gradually at times during the day, and not to do so at night until the temperature does not drop below 10ºC.

It is a plant that requires humidity for a correct development, and demands a high watering level.

In late summer, green peppers are ready to harvest, and are ready once ripe before the first autumn frosts. The peppers continue to ripen after they are picked.

Alchimia is not responsible for any crazy challenges that can be made with these peppers ;).
