Juanita la Lagrimosa, the origins of CBD
The birth of CBD-rich cannabis strains
Today, one can find a myriad of cannabis genetics with high CBD content on the seed market, with diverse cannabinoid ratios and thus medicinal effects. From 1:1 THC:CBD varieties to those with awesome 1:20 (even higher) ratios, breeders and seed producers have relentlessly bred new CBD strains over the past years. But where do all these new varieties come from?
According to an article published by Soft Secrets, and as our friend Jimi from Reggae Seeds confirms, it all started with the creation of Juanita la Lagrimosa (Reina Madre x NYCD), the flagship strain of this seed company.
In this case, the parent transmitting the CBD trait was a New York City Diesel plant selected by Jimi from a pack of Soma Seeds purchased at 2004 Spannabis. 3 nice males were selected, one of them being particularly outstanding in terms of aroma.
This male was crossed with Reina Madre (to create Juanita) but also with Blue Heaven, thus creating a second strain with amazing traits, Kalijah, which is also available in their catalog and was used to develop one of their feminised varieties, O'Haze Red.
The basis of modern breeding for CBD-rich genetics had just started. On the one hand, Jimi stabilized the Kalijah strain, while a friend of his did the same with Juanita. They both found amazing plants during the selection process, which would become the respective elite clones of each strain.
From Reggae Seeds to Resin Seeds
It is 2008 and Soma's son-in-law is visiting Jimi and Anna (couple and co-founders of Reggae Seeds). He purchases 2.000 Dancehall seeds (Juanita x Kalijah) and 5.000 Dub seeds (Critical Mass x Kalijah), telling them they were going to be shipped to Canada.
The truth is that those seeds were sold to Jaime from Resin Seeds as MK Ultra x G13 Haze. 100 of these seeds were planted, and the best individuals produced the Cannatonic and Cannatonic II hybrids. On the other hand, a friend of Jaime popped 50 seeds of the same batch and selected Dulce Canna and Dieseltonic.
Resin Seeds decided to entry the 2008 High Times Cannabis Cup in Amsterdam with Cannatonic, getting the third place in the Sativa category and thus becoming the first Spanish seed company ever awarded in this prestigious event.
As a result of this success, Jaime decided to perform lab tests of Cannatonic, Dulce Canna and Dieseltonic. He soon discovered that all three strains had high CBD content, something completely unexpected. Soon after, Resin Seeds started the first marketing campaign ever of CBD-rich varieties.
Meanwhile, Jimi also realized he had something special in hand, so he also tested Juanita la Lagrimosa. Of course, it also reached high CBD amounts, as other genetics from Reggae Seeds. Actually, Dancehall was awarded first prize in the Indoor Bio category in 2010 and 2011 at Spannabis.
In short, CBD strains were born in Girona, Catalonia, and from there they travelled across the globe to the joy of many medical cannabis patients.
Modern CBD-rich cannabis strains
In 2010, Elite Seeds and Reggae Seeds started a joint project to develop a stable, CBD rich, feminised version of Juanita la Lagrimosa. They selected a few plants and backrossed them with Juanita until finding a plant with high CBD content and low THC.
At the same time, Jimi also selected a suitable male and started a breeding project to create the definitive, medicinal version of Juanita, with 1:1 THC:CBD ratio.
As we can see, the development of Juanita la Lagrimosa represented a true revolution in the cannabis seed sector, from which hundreds of hybrids were then created. You'll find Juanita's genes in strains from diverse seed banks, like Philosopher Seeds, Royal Queen Seeds, French Touch Seeds and, of course, Reggae Seeds.
