Cannabis nutrition
Like any plant, cannabis needs a series of mineral elements to grow healthy and produce quality flowers. Although water and air provide some of them, most must be available in the substrate so the roots can absorb them.
The most well-known are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, the famous NPK you'll see on any fertilizer container:
- Nitrogen is key for building plant tissue: leaves, stems, and all that green we love to see.
- Phosphorus participates in metabolic processes related to energy and flower formation.
- Potassium, for its part, regulates multiple physiological functions and contributes to the plant's overall development.
But don't forget about micronutrients like calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, manganese, zinc, or boron, as they are equally necessary, albeit in smaller quantities.
The key to a good crop isn't in providing large amounts of fertilizer, but in giving the plant what it needs at each moment. More isn't always better, and you'll learn that very quickly.
What your plant needs during growth
The vegetative phase begins once the plant has developed its first true leaves and lasts until the start of flowering. During this period, the goal is to build a strong and robust structure that will later be capable of supporting a good harvest.
During growth, the demand for nitrogen is high. The plant constantly produces new leaves, branches and tissues, so it needs this element in sufficient quantities. When nitrogen is scarce, the older leaves turn yellow prematurely and growth visibly slows down.
Be careful though, because overdoing it isn't a good idea either. Excess nitrogen can result in lush but unbalanced plants, much more vulnerable to pests and diseases. This is where slow-release solid fertilizers have an advantage: their gradual supply avoids sudden fluctuations and provides stable nutrition week after week.
Feeding changes when flowering arrives
When the plant transitions to the flowering phase, its nutritional needs change. Vegetative growth takes a back seat and all energy is directed toward bud formation. This is when the nutrient ratio needs to be adjusted.

This drastically reduces the risk of over-fertilization and eliminates the need to prepare nutrient solutions at each watering.
Additionally, they require far fewer technical controls. Forget about measuring electrical conductivity (EC) at each watering or making continuous adjustments. For a beginner, this stability is a gift. The substrate acts as a nutritional reserve and the plant takes what it needs when it needs it.

Common mistakes to avoid
Choosing a good fertilizer is only part of success. There are certain mistakes that are very common among beginners and that are worth knowing about to avoid stumbling over them.
The first and most common is over-fertilizing. Young plants respond much better to balanced nutrition than to large doses of fertilizer. In cannabis cultivation, often less is more.
Another important point to keep in mind is that many commercial substrates already come with initial fertilization incorporated (those of the All Mix type). If you add large quantities of fertilizer from day one, you can create imbalances that are later difficult to correct. And lastly, don't neglect watering, a permanently waterlogged substrate limits root oxygenation and harms microbial activity, which is precisely what makes solid organic fertilizers work.
