Cannabis strains with fruity flavour
List of contents
Today, we have thounsands of cannabis strains with tens of different traits, so that virtually any type of grower can easily find what he's looking for. Today we'll focus on strains with fruity flavour, like oranges, lemons, strawberries or blueberries. Thus, in this article we'll list some of the best and most reputed fruity cannabis strains, which have a terpene profile (terpenes are aromatic molecules which give marijuana its particular scent and taste) reminiscent of these fruits.
Cannabis strains with citrus flavour
Citrus flavour, which is present in some local strains from Asia or South America, comes from a terpene called limonene. Highly appreciated by many users, these strains have been bred to fix this trait and even enrich it, so we can now find diverse genetic lines with complex citrus scent, each of them with its own nuances and personality. In this way, Las Vegas Lemon Skunk has favored the appearance of many other strains with citrus aroma, like Super Lemon OG, Lemon OG Candy, Lemon Walker...
However, and depending on concentrations and interactions with other terpenes, another limonene isomer can also produce a scent more similar to oranges or mandarins. Without a doubt, Orange Bud - a particularly smelly Skunk phenotype which became a legend in many Dutch coffee shops - is one of the classics from the 80s with this trait. Recently, The guys at Dutch Passion presented a new version of this classic, an Orange Bud x California Orange hybrid which they've called Orange Hill.
At the present time, there are plenty of strains with orange scent, from TGA's Agent Orange (which combines orange and sweet notes) to Orange Creamiscle, California Orange or Orange Sorbet from Karma Genetics.
On the other hand, we have other genetics more similar to mandarins or grapefruits. New York City Diesel has been used in many hybrids developed in Europe for its awesome mandarin scent; OG Fuel, Red Diesel or Session are all crosses containing NYCD genes and with intense citrus flavour.
Across the pond, in the USA, Tangie has become a reference when it comes to developing cannabis strains with sweet, acid and citrus aroma, as we see in genetics like Tangie, Sour Tangie or TangieMatic. Tangie is available in regular, feminised and automatic seed form, being very popular among all types of growers but particularly among enthusiasts of resin extractions mainly due its amazing scent.
Cannabis strains with tropical fruits flavour
Mango, kiwi, pineapple...some marijuana genetics are achracterized for their tropical flavour, reminiscent of exotic fruits. Just to take an example, Somango has been used to create countless new hybrids, like Tropimango, Somango 47, Mango Cream...The main responsible for this flavour is a terpene called myrcene, which is found in large amounts in fruits like mangos.
Another strain renowned for its unique, tropical scent is Cinderella 99 from Brothers Grimm Seeds, which comes from a Jack Herer line and can be found in many other hybrids: Blue Fin, Rosetta Stone, TGA's Jack Skellington, Sexbud or C99, which can be found in feminised seed form.
Also, and if you're a love of pineapple, you should try strains like Mosca Seeds Pinapple Mayhem, Pinapple Chunk, Pineapple Express...All these varieties have different genetics although they all share sweet, pineapple notes.
Cannabis strains with red fruits flavour
Strawberry Cough, developed by Kyle Kushman, appeared on the market in the 90s and soon became one of the very first modern varieties to produce strawberry scent. As we've seen with many other genetics, this plant was used to create other strains like Strawberry Amnesia, Strawberry Sour Diesel, Strawberry Daiquiri...Other strains with different genetics also have strawberry notes, as is the case with Mandala Seeds Krystalica or some Bubble Gum phenos found in Strawberry Banana seeds.
On the other hand, breeder DJ Short created the renowned Blueberry strain, which quickly became a classic in the international cannabis scene. This plant is known for its blueberry scent, which nowadays can be found in hundreds of hybrids.
Other strains have aromas reminiscent of raspberries and/or blackberries, like Pakistan Chitral Kush, BlackBerry or Cherrygasm, which has intense cherry notes.
Seed banks with fruity strains
Sometimes, this type of flavour is the most important trait for many growers when selecting new plants, so some seed companies have specialized in developing strains with this terpene profile.
Among them, we must highlight TGA Subcool, a cannabis seed company with plenty of fruity strains coming from their Jack the Ripper and Space Queen males. These two plants are amongst the varieties with richer terpene profile, along with Strawberry Cough, Cherry Pie or Orange Velvet, and are parents of hybrids with very complex aromas - from kiwi to pear - like Jilly Bean, Qleaner, Strawberry Daiquiri, Lemon Stilton...
For their part, Brothers Grimm Seeds also have several fruity strains, most of them being descendants of their acclaimed Cinderella 99 (Jack Herer, Princess line). Available as regular seeds, Apollo 13, Killer Queen or Rosetta Stone are examples of these genetics.
Last but not least, Philosopher Seeds offers a complete line of genetics rich in fruity terpenes, the socalled Golo Line, where you can also find strains with high CBD content. One of their top males comes from an own selection of Somango, and is called Tropimango precisely for its tropical flavour. Apart from that one, Orange Candy, Sugar Pop or Lemon OG Candy also have a terpene profile similar to fruits.
Happy tasting!
