The genetic origin of cannabis

The genetic origin of cannabis

A study by researchers at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland), which was published in the Science Advances journal in 2021, analyses the cannabis genome in an attempt to uncover the history of the domestication of the plant for cultivation purposes.

Cannabis sativa L. is one of the first domesticated plants and one of the most controversial, with genetics that have fluctuated over the centuries with the social, economic, and cultural development of different human societies.

Even though it was originally a great source of food, textiles, and hemp seed oil, this type of crop experienced a steep decline in the 20th century in favour of the expansion of recreational marihuana.

Malta - Europe's first country to legalise recreational cannabis

Malta - Europe's first country to legalise recreational cannabis
Malta, the first European country to legalise recreational cannabis

This week, the Republic of Malta has officially become the first country in Europe to legalise cannabis for recreational use, in a move that has caught the international community somewhat by surprise and at the same time taken the wind out of the sails of Luxembourg, the country that was initially set to take this "first in Europe" title but whose parliament has yet to formally approve any new legislation.

In a historic session that took place on Tuesday, December 14th, the Maltese parliament voted to approve the new legislation, with 36 votes in favour of the initiative and 27 votes against it. These legal changes mean that residents of the Maltese archipelago will now be able to legally grow their own cannabis at home and possess small amounts of cannabis without fear of arrest or prosecution. The measure also provides for the establishment of cannabis social clubs to supply users, similar to the Spanish model of associations.

‘Blockchain’ and cryptocurrencies in the cannabis industry

‘Blockchain’ and cryptocurrencies in the cannabis industry

Over recent years, the onset of legalisation in different countries has helped the cannabis industry take off, producing an explosion of weed-related companies, some of which have even gone public on the stock market.

The cannabis stocks being traded on these exchanges bear a striking resemblance to cryptocurrencies, as both are part of new and emerging industries that are still working towards normative regulation at all levels. And like cryptocurrencies, these stocks are experiencing high volatility as a result of the market still not understanding how to value these assets.

But at the same time, they hold a special attraction for small investors due to their ease of use and access. However, beyond cryptocurrencies, the true potential for the cannabis sector lies in blockchain, which is the underlying technology behind cryptocurrencies and a concept That could truly elevate the cannabis industry to a new high. a new level of transparency and security like never before seen.

RIP Frenchy Cannoli, master hashishin

RIP Frenchy Cannoli, master hashishin

Today we want to pay tribute to one of the most passionate lovers of cannabis - and, of course, hashish - that we've had the pleasure of meeting in this business, the legendary hashishin Frenchy Cannoli, who sadly passed away due to complications during a surgical operation on July 18, 2021.

Born on December 13, 1956, this young man raised in Nice (France) soon felt the need to travel the world and visit the principal hashish-producing countries, an adventure that began as soon as possible and that led him to a life of constant travels for more than two decades, in which he learned all kinds of production techniques for this cannabis derivative. A life full of excitement and adventure that, unfortunately, has ended all too abruptly.

High Times, the cannabis reference magazine

High Times, the cannabis reference magazine

In today's article, we want to discuss one of the cornerstones of cannabis culture, the American magazine High Times, a publication born in the 70s, of which you probably have heard of. The success of this magazine has changed the way the general public sees marijuana, normalizing cannabis use and cultivation, and relating these aspects to celebrities from many different backgrounds.

Indeed, since 1970, High Times readers have been able to admire stunning double-page photos of cannabis plants, while dreaming of seeing this plant legalized and accepted by society. However, those were different times, and all that seemed a mere utopia, something very difficult to achieve in a society that hardly had any information about weed.

Today, in 2021, and after more than 40 years of High Times history, things have changed a lot, although the spirit of the publication remains the same; the cannabis reference magazine for several generations of the plant enthusiasts.

After the fire: Interview with Subcool

Subcool - from TGA Subcool to The Dank

Subcool, the legendary American breeder and co-founder of TGA Subcool seed bank, is back with a vengeance after suffering the loss of his home, his crops, and all his genetics on October 8th 2017, due to the wildfire that ravaged the forests of Northern California. This blow, both on a personal and on a business level, would knock any of us down, but "The Weed Nerd" has managed to rise from the ashes and transform his misfortune into a new opportunity, relocating himself within the sector, changing his strategy, and returning with a commendable mindset.

Before all this happened, his life was already changing due to a divorce, which also impacted the seed bank TGA Subcool, currently in possession of his ex-partner, and the creation of "The Dank", a cannabis conglomerate focused on offering cannabis seeds and producing premium quality flowers and medical-grade resin extractions, while striving to provide free information about cannabis growing.

Spannabis 2019 - Alchimia Report

In Barcelona during the weekend of 15-17 March 2019, the 16th edition of Spannabis took place, without a doubt the most important cannabis fair in Europe. For three days, the Fira de Cornellà expo centre in Barcelona became the centre of the global cannabis industry, where more than 300 exhibitors came together, including the market's foremost national and international brands, with more than 4,000 accredited professionals dedicated to the multitude of uses that the cannabis plant offers.

Spannabis is considered a benchmark for cannabis expos worldwide and this was reflected by this year's new record in attendance. As reported by the organization itself, more than 25,000 people visited Spannabis over the 3 days of the expo, enormously exceeding the success of previous editions.

For this edition, Spannabis increased its capacity with the addition of a new pavilion and expanded the exhibition area and food trucks. On the opening day, the expo was treated to an appearance by the artist and singer Damien Marley (son of the legendary Jamaican artist Bob Marley), who was there to call for the "legalisation of cannabis and its industry."
