In the space set aside for the Cannabis Box Forum at this past Expogrow 2017 in Irún we interviewed Guillermo Moreno, pharmacologist, neuroscientist, who since 2008 has been in the USA obtaining a doctorate in Cannabinoid Pharmacology at the University of California and working in the laboratory of Dr. Daniele Piomelli, a pioneer in the knowledge of endocannabinoid pharmacology.

In this interview for Alchimia, Guillermo Moreno talks about his experiences in the USA and the various current issues on medicinal and recreational cannabis, scientific advances and marijuana legislation.

III Fresh Cup 2017

This past 24th June we travelled to Zaragoza in North-Eastern Spain to attend the third edition of the Fresh Cup, organised by local cannabis association Nuestra Señora del Agua and sponsored this year by Spanish seed bank Diamond Seeds. The “Cannabis Cup of the Summer” took place in a leafy, tranquil corner on the outskirts of the city, away from prying eyes in a walled garden divided into three zones, firstly the main stage area with shaded seating and a bar, then a fantastic chill-out area complete with swimming pool, bar, snack and juice bar and plenty of trees to provide shade and lastly a rooftop area to host the the “Battle of the Crews” and stands where we could check out products from many exhibitors from the cannabis industry.

The Golden State legalizes recreational cannabis

This past Tuesday 8 November 2016 will go down in history as the day in which California legalized the recreational use of marijuana across its territory with 56% of votes in favor of the bill. We must remember that this state was the first one to legalize the therapeutic use of cannabis and its derivative products in 1996. To access the products of the dispensaries an authorization card - issued by a doctor - was needed.

History of Cannabis in the United Kingdom

The United Kingdom has been using cannabis for centuries. Scythians, a nomadic Indo-European tribe, are believed to have introduced the plant into eastern Europe around 500BC. After this, germanic tribes may have carried cannabis into Germany, and from there the plant may have been brought into Britain with the Anglo-Saxon invasions during the 5th century (mentions to cannabis have been found in an Anglo-Saxon herbal). Over the centuries, hemp became a major source of vegetable fibre for Britain, especially for its impressive Navy. Indeed, the best ropes - and sails - at that time were made of hemp, normally coming from Russia.

Britain needed more hemp fibre, so King Henry VIII (1533) forced landlords to grow it in part of their lands. Over the years this need increased, so Elizabeth I actually fined those landlords who refused to grow hemp. Still, climate conditions in Britain were not ideal to grow it, so they began to grow hemp in Canada and other British colonies. Indeed, Canada became one of the main producers of hemp for Britain, since farmers were pushed to grow it instead of food crops with the promise that all production would be bought by the Britons. This demand remained stable during the XIX century, and even caused tensions between Britain and France, which tried to block the hemp trade between Russia and the UK.

One of the main cannabis events in Europe has just celebrated its fifth edition. More than 17.000 visitors and 1.200 professionals of the cannabis sector gathered once again in Irun, 200 metres away from the French border. Despite the horrible weather, thousands of people visited the fairground, 60% of them being French.

History of cannabis in Canada

The history of Canada goes hand in hand with cannabis cultivation. The first know Cannabis Sativa crop in canada dates back to 1606 in Nova Scotia, and was carried out by Louis Hébert, considered the first Canadian apothecary and friend of Samuel de Champlain, French explorer and founder of the province of Quebec (Eastern Canada).

By that time - early XVII century - cannabis was used throughout the world as a source of food, fibre, medicine, fuel...and of course recreationally. Still, it was mainly to produce textiles for the naval industry (ropes and sails) that cannabis was used in Europe, imported from Russia by Britain and from Asia by the Dutch. In this way, Europeans encouraged their colonies in America to start planting cannabis for fibre. The French and British promised to buy all the cannabis produced in Canadian farms, pushing settlers into cannabis cultivation. However, settlers often prefered to grow food crops - which they could eat - rather than cash crops like cannabis. Many names of American regions like Hemphills, Hempstead, Hampshires and Hemptons come from this time.
